Giving

We believe that each community has unique needs and individuals that are well-suited to meet those needs out of their time, talents and treasure. Christians have a special responsibility to notice the needs in their community and look out for those who are particularly vulnerable, especially orphans, widows, and the poor. High school drop-out rates for African-American males in Asheville hover around 70 % (Asheville-Citizen Times) and many children in our community are reading below grade-level (please look at the test results for Asheville City Schools at http://www.ncreportcards.org ). In addition to these statistics, the struggles of the children whom we tutor after-school have prompted us to work toward more comprehensive solutions. Our goal is to provide mature Christian teachers to work with children while they are still young, to teach these same children for a number of years, and to partner with parents, relatives and churches.

If you are interested in giving to the school, we encourage you to come and see the needs and how God is providing. Simply call Director Coral Jeffries at 776-6227 to set up an appointment. The children you meet, the stories you hear, and the needs you see will help you become more informed as you pray and perhaps give of your time or your treasure or your talent.

The Apostle Paul, when entrusted with spreading the gospel in distant lands by leaders in Jerusalem, reports "only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do." Galatians 2:10

We are happy to report that several families in the community have donated money for full and partial scholarships for the 2009-10 school year. A donation of $6000 covers the full tuition for the school year.

Many others have made contributions toward our operating expenses as well as the renovations of the building. We are grateful for these donations and for the countless hours of labor that have been provided by so many as we have painted, patched, hammered, and dug.

Wish List--Updated in Fall 2009

Gift Cards--we would especially love gift cards from Staples, Office Depot, Ingles, Lowe's, Home Depot or Barnes and Noble. We also need gas gift cards to be given as door prizes, etc. Then again, we never met a gift card we did not like.

Supporters--we are hoping to find 20 new supporters that will donate $100 per month and 50 supporters who will donate $500 per year to the school.

Class room supplies—paper towels, facial tissues, hand sanitizer, Clorox spray for hard surfaces, Clorox wipes, bandaids, and healthy snacks.

Books—we always have a need for high quality K-5 books. We can also use preschool books since many of our students have younger siblings.

Specific Books--Scholastic has put together sets of books that align with the Core Knowledge Curriculum that we use at New City. We are looking for a generous individual to purchase a set for our kindergarten, first, second, or third grade. Call Coral Jeffries (776-6227 if you are interested in helping).

Suggested individual books--New City has a Wish List available on Amazon. Follow the link from our home page.

Gently used office printers, laptops or other office equipment.

Tickets to special events and performances that we can share with our students and their families.

Puzzles, games, Legos, Playmobile, videos—if we don’t need what is donated, we can often pass it on to our families.

School desks, chairs, bookcases, clean area rugs, and folding tables—we will be adding a grade a year and will have ongoing needs for furniture.

Art supplies—water colors, paper, glue sticks, crayons, sketch pads, construction paper, etc.

Recorders and other musical instruments.

Children's books on tape or CDs.

Used Printer Cartridges--please collect them and bring them to the school or call Principal Woods (776-6228) and let her know that you have some. We can turn these in for money or credits for office supplies.
